Release | Antivirus compatibility and laptop backup

Optimize your Windows backups: an update engine compatible with antivirus software, sleep and AC power management for laptops, and improved progress tracking for administrators.

Release | Antivirus compatibility and laptop backup

1. Improved automatic update engine

One of our users' major concerns is KiwiBackup's compatibility with antivirus software. We have worked on improving our software's automatic update engine to prevent backups from being blocked when an antivirus detects a false positive. From now on, if an antivirus wrongly considers KiwiBackup a threat, the software will be able to get around the block and continue working normally. This improvement ensures that your backups run without interruption, even if an antivirus mistakenly identifies our software as malicious.

At the same time, we have also reworked the usability of the progress bar for backups in progress. This new version helps administrators better understand the status of ongoing backups, with a clearer view of active processes and their progress. This update aims to reduce ambiguity and make backup monitoring easier to read.

2. Optimized scheduled tasks for Windows laptops

Windows laptop users will now benefit from better management of scheduled backup tasks. One of the major new features is the ability to run a backup even when the computer is not plugged into AC power. This keeps data secure in all circumstances, including when the computer is used on the go.

In addition, the scheduled task can now wake the computer from sleep mode to perform the backup. This prevents backups from being missed if the computer is asleep, reducing the risk of data loss. This feature is particularly useful for users who don't always plug in their computer or who leave it in sleep mode for long periods.

3. Improved management of automatic updates

For all Windows computers, we have introduced major improvements to the management of automatic updates. First, we have limited the maximum run time of scheduled tasks to three hours. In the event of a crash, the task will not remain stuck indefinitely and can restart the next day to retry the update. This ensures better service continuity, even in the event of an incident.

In addition, the scheduled task now checks that the computer is connected to the network before starting an update. This avoids launching unnecessary jobs that could not complete for lack of a connection, which improves efficiency and reduces unnecessary waiting times.

4. Security fix for logs

Finally, we have rolled out a security fix with version 4.4.98, specifically for log management. Computers still running a version earlier than 4.4.95 no longer generate logs, which is reported by an alert email sent to the administrator indicating zero errors. The solution is to update these computers to the latest version. If you have trouble performing this update, please contact our technical support team, who will guide you through the process.
