Every month, the KiwiBackup technical team enhances its solutions to meet the operational needs of administrators and IT teams.

The April 2026 release introduces major changes in three areas: backup of Hyper-V virtualized environments, advanced control over user access, and a new “Expression” field for advanced backup filtering.

1. Backup and restore of Hyper-V environments

KiwiBackup can now back up Microsoft Hyper-V virtualized environments.

This new feature makes it possible to:

  • Back up complete virtual machines, including their system, data and configuration,
  • Quickly restore a VM in the event of an incident, to reduce service interruptions.

Native Hyper-V integration simplifies the protection of virtualized environments and centralizes their management in the same interface as your other backups.

2. Multi-user management and access rights

The client interface now includes role-based access management, to better secure operations and facilitate teamwork.

Three levels of rights are available:

  • Administrator: Full access to all client features.
  • Configuration rights: The user is only allowed to change the backup settings and conditions (included/excluded files, scheduling), without being able to access the backed-up data.
  • Restore rights: The user is only allowed to browse and restore data, without being able to alter the configuration of current backups.

This organization makes it possible to divide responsibilities clearly and limit the risk of errors or mishandling.

3. New “Expression” field for advanced backup filtering

The configuration file (kiwi.conf) gains a new field called “expression”, making it possible to define even more precise backup rules.

This field makes it possible to apply advanced conditions to finely control the data included in or excluded from backups.

You can now:

  • filter by extension (for example .pdf, .docx, etc.),
  • filter by file size (e.g. only back up files larger than 1 KB),
  • exclude empty files,
  • filter using regular expressions on the path,
  • filter using regular expressions on the file name,
  • combine several conditions for finer, customized backup rules.

This change makes it possible to tailor backup policies even more closely to the business and technical needs of each environment.

More information is available in our documentation.

Conclusion

The April updates strengthen your ability to manage your backups in a centralized, secure way suited to increasingly complex environments.

With Hyper-V virtual machine backup, fine-grained access management and a new field, KiwiBackup continues to evolve to fit fully into the daily practices of IT teams.
