Based on a sample of 20 TB of data, this study shows that the concepts of archiving and backup are still unclear in users' minds.
Indeed, 70% of backed-up data is never modified, which would rather suggest archiving it periodically than backing it up with sophisticated software that manages differentials between 2 versions of a file. For example, nearly 88% of Excel files and 84% of Word files have not been updated for more than 1 year.
Backup or archiving? One of the keys to sound data management in the future?
