Every year we celebrate World Password Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of password security in our digital lives. Your password is often the first line of defense against hackers, cybercriminals and online fraudsters. In fact, they usually go after the password first so they can get hold of your confidential data. That is why it is important to understand how to create a strong, secure password, and to take steps to protect and manage your passwords effectively.

What is the purpose of this day?

Who has never received an e-mail from someone posing as a public organization? A bank? Or the CPF training program? Almost everyone receives this type of e-mail at some point in their life. This day aims to remind people that passwords are a crucial first line of defense against cyberattacks, data breaches and online fraud.

The goal is to make Internet users aware of online security risks and encourage them to adopt stronger, more secure password practices. This day also encourages organizations, businesses and governments to improve their password security policies and take steps to effectively protect their users' personal data.

How to choose your passwords?

Here are some tips for choosing strong passwords:

  • Password length: the longer your password, the harder it is to guess. Try to choose passwords of at least 12 characters.
  • Complexity: use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols in your password.
  • Avoid common words: avoid using common words, family names, dates of birth, or any other easily accessible or guessable information.
  • Use different passwords: never use the same password for several online accounts, because once a hacker has access to one of your accounts, they can easily access the others.
  • Use a password generator: if you have trouble creating a strong password, you can use an online password generator.
